An orifice flow meter consists of a standard orifice plate and a multi-parameter differential pressure transmitter (or differential pressure transmitter, temperature transmitter, pressure transmitter), forming a high rangeability differential pressure flow device. It can measure the flow rate of gases, steam, liquids, and water, and is widely used in process control and measurement in the petroleum, chemical, metallurgical, power, heating, and water supply industries.
Working Principle of Orifice Flow Meter
The principle of the orifice flow meter is based on the well-known Bernoulli's principle of fluid mechanics. A flow restriction device is placed in the pipeline. When fluid flows through the flow restriction device, a pressure difference (pressure difference P) is generated on both sides of the flow restriction device. At this time, the flow rate is proportional to the square root of the pressure difference.
Uses, Characteristics, and Application Range of Orifice Flow Meter
1. Uses: A throttling differential pressure flow meter consists of three parts: a throttling device, a differential pressure transmitter, and a flow integrator. The throttling device is the main component directly installed in the pipeline, while the differential pressure transmitter and the integrator are secondary components. It is mainly used for various gases (pure or dusty), steam (saturated or superheated), and liquids (conductive or non-conductive) flowing through pipelines; strong corrosiveness; or containing tiny particles, viscosity, or dirt). It can directly measure volumetric flow rate or mass flow rate.
2. Working Conditions, Characteristics, and Application Range of Orifice Flow Meter
① Operating Conditions
a. In the measuring section, the fluid must fill the circular pipe and continuously flow through the throttling device;
b. The fluid must be a homogeneous single-phase fluid physically and thermodynamically;
c. The fluid measured by the throttling device must be in steady flow, or can be considered as a stable slowly changing fluid, not suitable for pulsating flow and critical flow measurement;
② Characteristics and Application Range
a. Standard throttling devices can ensure their measurement accuracy without actual flow calibration;
b. It is suitable for a wide range of measured media and can be used for flow measurement of almost all gases, steam, and liquids;
c. Applicable diameter ratio β is 0.22~0.75, Reynolds number ReD≥5000, pipe diameter DN50~1000mm, allowing extension to 5000mm. β=d/D, d—orifice diameter;
d—actual inner diameter of the pipe;
d. Operating pressure can be as high as 32MPa, and can also be used for negative pressure;
e. Moderate temperature range: -30℃~+650℃;
f. Intelligent differential pressure flow meters use intelligent differential pressure transmitters. According to the flow changes of the measured object, the differential pressure value (within the specified range) can be set on site through buttons or communication, thereby changing the flow range and greatly expanding the flow range of the system;
g. No moving parts, safe and reliable structure, simple operation, easy to master, maintenance-free.
