In industrial production and process control, orifice flowmeter as a classic differential pressure flow measurement instrument, is widely used for measuring the flow of liquids, gases, and steam due to its simple structure, stable performance, and low cost. However, the installation quality of orifice flowmeters directly affects its measurement accuracy and service life. Improper installation can lead to increased measurement errors, instrument damage, or even system failure. Therefore, mastering the installation steps for orifice flowmeters and precautions is crucial.
This article will provide a detailed introduction the installation steps for orifice flowmeters to help you fully understand how to correctly install this critical instrument, from preparation to final commissioning. Both novice engineers and experienced technicians can gain practical guidance from it.
I. Preparation before Installation
Before formal installation, orifice flowmeter sufcient preparation is fundamental to ensuring a smooth installation. Here are several key areas to focus on:
Confirm Installation Environment
The installation position of the orifice flowmeter should be selected on a straight pipe section, ensuring sufficient straight pipe length before and after. Typically, the upstream straight pipe length should be 10-15 times the pipe diameter and the downstream straight pipe length should be 5 times the pipe diameter. This can effectively avoid the impact of unstable fluid flow on measurement accuracy.Check Pipe Conditions
Before installation, check whether the inner wall of the pipe is smooth, free of rust or debris. If the inner wall of the pipe is rough or contains foreign matter, it may affect the fluid flow state and lead to measurement errors.Prepare Installation Tools and Materials
Installing an orifice flowmeter requires tools and materials such as wrenches, screwdrivers, gaskets, and bolts. Ensure these tools are complete and reliable in quality to avoid problems during installation.Verify Instrument Specifications
Confirm that the model, size, and material of the orifice flowmeter match the pipeline. In particular, the ratio of the orifice diameter to the pipe inner diameter (β value) should meet design requirements.
II. Installation Steps for Orifice Flowmeters
1. Install the Orifice Plate Assembly
The core component of an orifice flowmeter is the orifice plate, and its installation position and direction are crucial. Here are the specific steps:
- Place the orifice plate between the pipe flanges, ensuring the centerline of the orifice plate aligns with the centerline of the pipe.
- Pay attention to the installation direction of the orifice plate, the sharp edge of the orifice plate should face the fluid inflow direction and the blunt edge should face the outflow direction.
- Use gaskets to ensure the sealing between the orifice plate and the flange, preventing leakage.
2. Connect the Differential Pressure Transmitter
Orifice flowmeters calculate flow by measuring the pressure difference across the orifice plate, so the differential pressure transmitter needs to be connected correctly:
- Install pressure taps upstream and downstream of the orifice plate, and ensure the positions of the pressure taps comply with design requirements.
- Connect the pressure taps to the differential pressure transmitter, ensuring a good seal at the connections to prevent leakage.
- If the measured medium is liquid, ensure the pressure taps are filled with liquid to avoid air bubbles affecting measurement accuracy.
3. Fastening and Sealing
After installation, use bolts to fasten the flanges, ensuring a secure and sealed connection between the orifice plate and the pipe.
- Gradually tighten the bolts in a diagonal sequence to avoid poor sealing due to uneven force.
- Check all connections for leaks, and use sealant or sealing tape if necessary to enhance the sealing effect.
4. Grounding and Lightning Protection Measures
If the measured medium is flammable or explosive gas or liquid, ensure that the orifice flowmeter and piping system are well grounded to prevent electrostatic accumulation from causing danger. In addition, in areas prone to lightning, lightning protection measures should be taken to protect the instrument and system safety.
III. Commissioning and Calibration after Installation
After installation, the orifice flowmeter must be commissioned and calibrated to ensure its measurement accuracy and stability.
Check System Sealing
Before starting the system, use soapy water or a leak detector to check all connections for leaks. If a leak is found, it must be handled immediately.Zero Point Calibration
In a no-flow state, check if the output of the differential pressure transmitter is zero. If there is a deviation, zero-point calibration is required.Flow Test
Under actual operating conditions, gradually increase the flow and observe whether the measured value of the orifice flowmeter is consistent with the expected value. If there is a large deviation, check if the installation is correct or recalibrate the instrument.Record Data
After commissioning, record the measured data of the orifice flowmeter and compare it with the design values. Ensure that the measurement accuracy meets the requirements.
IV. Common Problems and Solutions during Installation
During the installation of orifice flowmeters, some common problems may be encountered. Here are a few typical problems and their solutions:
Excessive Measurement Error
Possible causes: Incorrect orifice plate installation direction, improper pressure tap position, insufficient straight pipe length.
Solution: Check orifice plate direction, adjust pressure tap position, increase straight pipe length.Instrument No Signal Output
Possible cause: Differential pressure transmitter not connected correctly or damaged.
Solution: Check connection lines, replace differential pressure transmitter if necessary.System leakage
Possible cause: Gasket damaged or bolts not tightened.
Solution: Replace gasket, re-tighten bolts.
V. Installation Precautions
To ensure the long-term stable operation of the orifice flowmeter, the following points should also be noted during installation:
Avoid vibration and shock
The orifice flowmeter should be installed in a location free from strong vibration and shock to avoid affecting measurement accuracy or damaging the instrument.Prevent medium corrosion
If the measured medium is corrosive, select orifice plates and seals made of corrosion-resistant materials to extend the service life of the instrument.Regular maintenance
After installation, regularly check the working status of the orifice flowmeter, clean the pressure tapping pipes and deposits on the orifice plate to ensure measurement accuracy.
By following the above steps and precautions, you can successfully complete the installation of the orifice flowmeter and ensure its optimal performance in practical applications.
