Flow Meter It is an instrument used to measure the speed and flow rate of water, widely used in water conservancy projects, environmental protection, industrial production, and scientific research. Understanding Flow Meter the internal structure and operating mechanism not only helps us better use and maintain these devices but also provides a basis for technological innovation in related fields. This article will reveal in detail the internal structure and operating mechanism of the flow meter.
I. Basic Types of Flow Meters
There are many types of flow meters. According to the different measurement principles and structures, they can be mainly divided into the following categories:

- Mechanical Flow Meter It measures the water flow velocity through the movement of mechanical components, such as propeller flow meters and turbine flow meters.
- Electromagnetic Flow Meter It uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to measure the water flow velocity, such as Electromagnetic flow meter 。
- Ultrasonic Flow Meter It measures the water flow velocity through the time difference or frequency difference of ultrasonic waves propagating in the water.
- Differential Pressure Flow Meter It calculates the flow rate by measuring the pressure difference before and after the fluid flows through the throttling device, such as Orifice plate flow meter and Venturi flow meter, etc.
II. Internal Structure and Operating Mechanism of Mechanical Flow Meters
1. Propeller Flow Meter
Internal Structure :
- Propeller Located at the front end of the flow meter, it is usually made of lightweight material and can rotate with the water flow.
- Transmission Shaft Connects the propeller and the counter, transmitting the rotational motion of the propeller to the counter.
- Counter Records the number of rotations of the propeller, usually amplified and displayed through a gear transmission system.
- Housing Protects the internal structure and prevents debris from entering.
Operating Mechanism :
When water flows through the propeller, the propeller rotates under the action of fluid dynamics. The rotational speed of the propeller is proportional to the water flow velocity. Through the transmission shaft, the rotational motion of the propeller is transmitted to the counter, and the counter records the number of rotations of the propeller. Through a pre-calibrated relationship, the water flow velocity and flow rate can be calculated.
2. Turbine Flow Meter
Internal Structure :
- Turbine Located in the center of the flow meter, the blade design allows it to rotate efficiently.
- Magnetic Induction System Usually includes a permanent magnet and an induction coil, used to detect the rotation of the turbine.
- Electronic Counter Receives signals from the magnetic induction system, calculates and displays the flow rate.
- Housing It protects the internal structure and ensures smooth fluid passage.
Operating Mechanism :
When water flows through the turbine, the turbine rotates under the action of fluid dynamics. The rotational speed of the turbine is proportional to the water flow velocity. The magnetic induction system detects the rotation of the turbine and generates an electrical signal. The electronic counter receives these signals, processes them, and displays the flow rate data.
III. Internal Structure and Operating Mechanism of Electromagnetic Flow Meters
Internal Structure :
- Electrode Usually two, installed on both sides of the pipeline, used to detect the induced electromotive force.
- Excitation Coil Installed outside the pipeline, used to generate a uniform magnetic field.
- Electronic Converter Receives signals from the electrodes, processes and calculates them.
- Pipeline Usually made of non-magnetic material to ensure uniform magnetic field distribution.
Operating Mechanism :
After the excitation coil is energized, a uniform magnetic field is generated in the pipeline. When the conductive fluid passes through the pipeline, according to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, the fluid cuts the magnetic lines of force, generating an induced electromotive force between the electrodes. The magnitude of the induced electromotive force is proportional to the fluid velocity. The electronic converter receives the signals from the electrodes, amplifies, filters, and calculates them, and finally displays the flow rate data.
IV. Internal Structure and Operating Mechanism of Ultrasonic Flow Meters
Internal Structure :
- Ultrasonic Transmitter Used to transmit ultrasonic signals.
- Ultrasonic Receiver Used to receive the reflected ultrasonic signals.
- Electronic Processing Unit Processes ultrasonic signals and calculates the water flow velocity.
- Pipeline or Sensor Component where the ultrasonic transmitter and receiver are installed.
Operating Mechanism :
Ultrasonic flow meters mainly have two measurement methods: time-difference method and frequency-difference method.
- Time-Difference Method The ultrasonic transmitter transmits ultrasonic signals into the water, and the signals propagate in the water and are received by the receiver. Due to the existence of water flow, the propagation time of ultrasonic waves in the downstream and upstream directions is different. By measuring the time difference between these two, the water flow velocity can be calculated.
- Frequency-Difference Method The ultrasonic transmitter and receiver transmit and receive ultrasonic signals respectively. Due to the existence of water flow, the frequency of the reflected ultrasonic waves will shift. By measuring the frequency difference, the water flow velocity can be calculated.
The electronic processing unit receives the ultrasonic signal, processes it to calculate the water flow velocity, and further calculates the flow rate.
V. Internal Structure and Operating Mechanism of Differential Pressure Flow Meters
1. Orifice plate flow meter
Internal Structure :
- Orifice plate : Installed in the pipeline, with a small hole in the center to generate a pressure difference.
- Differential pressure sensor : Installed before and after the orifice plate to measure the pressure difference.
- Electronic Converter : Receives the pressure difference signal and calculates the flow rate.
Operating Mechanism :
When fluid flows through the orifice plate, the flow velocity increases due to the reduced aperture. According to Bernoulli's equation, a pressure difference will be generated before and after the orifice plate. The differential pressure sensor measures this pressure difference, and the electronic converter calculates the flow rate based on the pressure difference and the pre-calibrated relationship.
2. Venturi flow meter
Internal Structure :
- Venturi tube : Consists of a converging section, throat, and diverging section, used to generate a pressure difference.
- Differential pressure sensor : Installed in the converging section and throat of the Venturi tube to measure the pressure difference.
- Electronic Converter : Receives the pressure difference signal and calculates the flow rate.
Operating Mechanism :
When fluid flows through the Venturi tube, the flow velocity increases in the converging section, and the pressure decreases, reaching the maximum flow velocity and minimum pressure in the throat. The differential pressure sensor measures the pressure difference between the converging section and the throat, and the electronic converter calculates the flow rate based on the pressure difference and the pre-calibrated relationship.
VI. Calibration and Maintenance of Flow Meters
Calibration and maintenance are essential to ensure the measurement accuracy and long-term stable operation of flow meters.
1. Calibration
- Laboratory calibration : Conducted on a standard flow device to ensure the measurement accuracy of the flow meter.
- Field calibration : Conducted in the actual operating environment, considering the characteristics of the actual fluid.
2. Maintenance
- Regular inspection : Check whether sensors, electrodes, transmission components, etc., are functioning normally.
- Cleaning : Regularly clean the pipeline and sensors to prevent debris from affecting the measurement.
- Component replacement : Replace worn or damaged components in a timely manner.
VII. Application Prospects of Flow Meters
With the advancement of technology, flow meters are constantly improving in terms of accuracy, stability, and intelligence, and their application fields are also expanding.
- Smart water management : Used for real-time monitoring and management of urban water supply and drainage systems.
- Environmental protection : Monitor the water flow conditions of rivers and lakes to assess water environmental quality.

VIII. Conclusion
As key equipment for measuring water flow velocity and flow rate, the complexity of the internal structure and operating mechanism of flow meters determines their measurement accuracy and reliability. Through an in-depth analysis of different types of flow meters, we can not only better understand and apply these devices but also provide a solid foundation for future technological innovation.
