Orifice Plate Flow Meter As a classic differential pressure flow measuring instrument, it is widely used in petroleum, chemical, power, and water conservancy industries. Its working principle is based on the pressure difference generated when fluid flows through the orifice plate. The flow rate of the fluid is calculated by measuring this pressure difference. Although Orifice Plate Flow Meter it has advantages such as simple structure and easy installation, in practical applications, certain skills are still needed for measuring different fluids to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the measurement results.
I. Basic Principle of Orifice Plate Flow Meter
The orifice plate flow meter mainly consists of an orifice plate, a differential pressure transmitter, and a flow display instrument. When the fluid flows through the orifice plate, due to the throttling effect of the orifice plate, the fluid velocity increases, and the static pressure decreases, thus forming a pressure difference before and after the orifice plate. According to Bernoulli's equation and the continuity equation, there is a certain relationship between this pressure difference and the fluid flow rate. The flow rate can be calculated by measuring the pressure difference.

II. Measurement Characteristics of Different Fluids
1. Liquid Measurement
Liquid measurement is the most common application scenario for orifice plate flow meters. For liquid measurement, the following points should be noted:
- Viscosity Influence High-viscosity liquids have a large pressure loss when flowing through the orifice plate, which may lead to measurement errors. In this case, an appropriate orifice plate size and material should be selected to reduce the influence of viscosity on the measurement.
- Temperature Change Changes in liquid temperature will affect its density and viscosity, thereby affecting the measurement results. Therefore, temperature compensation measures should be considered, such as installing a temperature sensor to correct the density parameters in the flow calculation formula in real time.
- Liquids Containing Impurities For liquids containing solid particles or impurities, the orifice plate should be cleaned regularly to prevent impurity deposition from affecting the measurement accuracy.
2. Gas Measurement
Compared with liquid measurement, gas measurement has greater compressibility and expansibility, and the following points should be paid special attention to:
- Pressure and Temperature Compensation Gas flow measurement requires pressure and temperature compensation to eliminate the influence of gas state changes on the measurement. The flow rate under standard conditions (such as 0°C, 101.325 kPa) is usually used for calculation.
- Flow Rate Limit When the gas flow rate is too high, it may cause vortices after the orifice plate, affecting the stability of the pressure difference measurement. Therefore, the gas flow rate should be controlled within a reasonable range.
- Influence of Compressibility The compressibility of gases can cause flow measurement errors, especially under high pressure difference conditions. In this case, an appropriate orifice plate type and installation method should be selected to reduce the influence of compressibility.
3. Steam Measurement
Steam measurement is a common application of orifice plate flow meters in thermal systems, and the following points should be noted:
- Influence of Phase Change When steam flows through the orifice plate, phase change (such as condensation) may occur, resulting in inaccurate pressure difference measurement. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the temperature before and after the orifice plate is consistent to avoid phase change.
- Influence of Dryness Changes in the dryness of wet steam will affect its density and flow velocity, thereby affecting the measurement results. Dryness correction should be performed to improve measurement accuracy.
- High Temperature and High Pressure Environment Steam measurement is usually carried out in a high-temperature and high-pressure environment, which has high requirements for the material and installation of the orifice plate. Orifice plate materials that are resistant to high temperatures and high pressures should be selected, and the installation should be ensured to be firm and reliable.
III. Measurement Techniques and Optimization Measures
1. Orifice Plate Selection and Design
- Orifice Plate Type Selection According to the fluid properties and measurement requirements, select the appropriate orifice plate type, such as standard orifice plate, nozzle orifice plate, Venturi orifice plate, etc. Different types of orifice plates have different flow coefficients and pressure difference characteristics, and should be selected according to the actual situation.
- Orifice Plate Size Design The orifice plate size (such as the diameter ratio β) has an important impact on the flow measurement accuracy. The orifice plate size should be reasonably designed according to factors such as the fluid flow range and pipe diameter to ensure measurement accuracy and range.
- Material Selection According to the fluid properties (such as corrosiveness, temperature, pressure, etc.), select the appropriate orifice plate material, such as stainless steel, Hastelloy alloy, etc., to ensure the durability and measurement stability of the orifice plate.
2. Installation and Debugging
- Installation Location The orifice plate should be installed on a straight pipe section, and the length of the straight pipe section before and after should meet the standard requirements to reduce the influence of fluid disturbance on the measurement. Usually, the length of the straight pipe section before the orifice plate should be 10-20 times the pipe diameter, and the length of the straight pipe section after the orifice plate should be 5-10 times the pipe diameter.
- Installation Angle When installing the orifice plate, ensure that its axis is parallel to the pipe axis to avoid measurement errors caused by inclined installation.
- Differential Pressure Transmitter Installation The differential pressure transmitter should be installed near the orifice plate to reduce the length of the pressure tapping pipe and reduce the pressure difference signal transmission error. The pressure tapping pipe should be kept horizontal or inclined upward to avoid liquid accumulation or gas accumulation.
3. Data Acquisition and Processing
- Differential Pressure Signal Acquisition The differential pressure transmitter should be calibrated regularly to ensure its measurement accuracy. When acquiring the differential pressure signal, attention should be paid to signal filtering and noise reduction to improve data quality.
- Temperature and Pressure Compensation For gas and steam measurement, temperature and pressure signals should be collected in real time for compensation correction during flow calculation.
- Flow Calculation Formula Selection Select the appropriate flow calculation formula based on the fluid properties and measurement conditions, such as the ISO 5167 standard formula or AGA reports, to ensure the accuracy of the calculation results.
4. Maintenance and Calibration
- Regular Cleaning For fluids containing impurities, the orifice plate should be cleaned regularly to prevent impurity deposition from affecting the measurement accuracy.
- Inspection and Maintenance Regularly inspect the integrity of the orifice plate, differential pressure transmitter, pressure tapping pipes, and other components, and promptly identify and address any malfunctions.
- Calibration Regularly calibrate the orifice flow meter to ensure its measurement accuracy. Calibration can be performed using a standard flow device or laboratory calibration methods.
IV. Case Analysis
Case 1: High-Viscosity Liquid Measurement
A chemical company needed to measure the flow rate of a high-viscosity liquid. After using a standard orifice flow meter, a large measurement error was discovered. Analysis showed that the pressure loss was significant when the high-viscosity liquid flowed through the orifice plate, leading to measurement errors. The solutions are as follows:
- Change Orifice Plate Type Use a low Reynolds number orifice plate, suitable for high-viscosity liquid measurement.
- Optimize Orifice Plate Size Redesign the orifice plate size based on the fluid viscosity and flow range to reduce pressure loss.
- Add Temperature Compensation Install a temperature sensor to correct the liquid density in real time and improve measurement accuracy.
Case 2: Wet Steam Measurement
A thermal power plant needed to measure the flow rate of wet steam. After using an orifice flow meter, the measurement results were found to be unstable. Analysis showed that the wet steam dryness varied greatly, leading to measurement errors. The solutions are as follows:
- Install a Dryness Meter Monitor steam dryness in real time and perform dryness correction.
- Optimize Orifice Plate Installation Ensure consistent temperature before and after the orifice plate to prevent phase changes.
- Use Dual Orifice Plate Measurement Measure the pressure difference using a dual orifice plate to improve measurement stability.
