Flow Meter It is an instrument used to measure the speed and flow rate of water, widely used in water conservancy projects, environmental monitoring, industrial production and scientific research fields. Understanding Flow Meter the structure and its internal working principle is of great significance for the correct use and maintenance of the flow meter and improving the measurement accuracy. This article will discuss in detail the basic structure, working principle, classification and application of flow meters.
I. Basic Structure of Flow Meter
The structure of a flow meter varies depending on the type, but the basic components are roughly the same, mainly including sensors, converters, displays and auxiliary devices.

Sensor Sensors are the core components of a flow meter, responsible for converting the speed or flow rate of water into measurable signals. Common sensor types include electromagnetic sensors, ultrasonic sensors, turbine sensors and differential pressure sensors.
Converter The function of the converter is to amplify, filter and convert the signals collected by the sensor into standard signal outputs. Converters typically include signal conditioning circuits, analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and microprocessors.
Display The display is used to display the measurement results in real time, which can be a digital display screen or an analog instrument panel. Modern flow meters are usually equipped with liquid crystal displays (LCDs) or touch screens, which can provide more intuitive data display and operation interface.
Auxiliary Devices Auxiliary devices include power modules, communication interfaces, protective housings, etc. The power module provides a stable power supply for the flow meter, the communication interface is used for data transmission and remote control, and the protective housing protects the internal components from external environmental influences.
II. Working Principle of Flow Meter
The working principle of a flow meter varies depending on the type of sensor. The working principles of several common types are introduced below.
Electromagnetic Flow Meter :
- Principle Electromagnetic flow meters are based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. When a conductive liquid flows through a magnetic field, an induced electromotive force is generated in the liquid, and the magnitude of the electromotive force is proportional to the flow velocity.
- Structure It mainly consists of an excitation coil, electrodes and a measuring pipe. The excitation coil generates a magnetic field, and the electrodes are used to detect the induced electromotive force.
- Working Process When the conductive liquid flows through the measuring pipe, the magnetic field generated by the excitation coil causes the free charges in the liquid to move, thus generating an induced electromotive force between the electrodes. By measuring the magnitude of the electromotive force, the flow velocity and flow rate of the liquid can be calculated.
Ultrasonic Flow Meter :
- Principle Ultrasonic flow meters use the difference in the speed of ultrasonic waves propagating in the fluid to measure the flow velocity. According to the Doppler effect or time difference method, the propagation time of ultrasonic waves in the upstream and downstream directions is different. The flow velocity can be calculated by measuring the time difference.
- Structure It mainly consists of an ultrasonic transmitter, a receiver and a measuring pipe. The transmitter emits ultrasonic waves, and the receiver receives the reflected ultrasonic waves.
- Working Process The ultrasonic transmitter emits ultrasonic waves into the fluid, and the receiver receives the reflected ultrasonic waves. By comparing the time difference between the upstream and downstream directions, the flow velocity and flow rate of the fluid can be calculated.
Turbine Flow Meter :
- Principle Turbine flow meters calculate the flow velocity by measuring the angular velocity of the turbine rotation. The rotational speed of the turbine is proportional to the flow velocity.
- Structure It mainly consists of a turbine, bearings, a magnetic sensor and a measuring pipe. The turbine is installed in the measuring pipe, and the magnetic sensor is used to detect the rotation of the turbine.
- Working Process When the fluid flows through the measuring pipe, it drives the turbine to rotate. The magnetic sensor detects the rotation signal of the turbine, and by calculating the frequency of the signal, the rotational speed of the turbine can be obtained, and then the flow velocity and flow rate of the fluid can be calculated.
Differential Pressure Flow Meter :
- Principle Differential pressure flow meters are based on Bernoulli's equation, and calculate the flow velocity by measuring the pressure difference before and after the fluid flows through the flow restriction device. The pressure difference is proportional to the square of the flow velocity.
- Structure It mainly consists of a flow restriction device (such as an orifice plate, nozzle, etc.), a differential pressure sensor and a measuring pipe. The flow restriction device is used to generate a pressure difference, and the differential pressure sensor is used to measure the pressure difference.
- Working Process When the fluid flows through the flow restriction device, due to the contraction of the flow channel, the flow velocity increases and the pressure decreases, thus generating a pressure difference before and after the flow restriction device. The differential pressure sensor measures the pressure difference, and the flow velocity and flow rate of the fluid are calculated using Bernoulli's equation.
III. Classification of Flow Meters
According to different sensor types and working principles, flow meters can be divided into the following categories:
Electromagnetic Flow Meter Suitable for conductive liquid measurement, widely used in wastewater treatment, water conservancy projects, etc.
Ultrasonic Flow Meter Suitable for the measurement of clean liquids and liquids containing impurities, often used in water supply systems, industrial process control, etc.
Turbine Flow Meter Suitable for clean liquid measurement, high precision, often used in petroleum, chemical industry, etc.
Differential Pressure Flow Meter Suitable for the measurement of various liquids and gases, widely used in industrial production process control.
Volumetric Flow Meter The flow rate is calculated by measuring the time it takes for the fluid to pass through a fixed volume, suitable for high-precision measurement, such as oil metering.
Thermal Flow Meter It uses fluid temperature changes to measure flow velocity, suitable for gas and low-velocity liquid measurement.
IV. Application of Flow Meters
